Join us for a double feature of Japanese “strange” films this Halloween season! They’re somewhat creepy, but not slashers like those North American ones. That’s why we think even people who don’t like grotesque slasher films might still enjoy this screening (though of course, we can’t guarantee it 100%...).

You can come to both screenings, or just one.

We would like to introduce these two films:

Inu-Oh (directed by YUASA Masa’aki, 2021) is set in Japan about 600 years ago, the film follows Tomona, a biwa-playing priest, and Inu-Oh, a “monstrous” yet gifted dancer, as they strive to console the lost spirits of the Heike clan through song and dance.

*This film is rated PG-13. It is recommended for viewers aged 13 and older, and parental guidance is strongly advised for children under 13.

Pulse (also known as Kairo directed by KUROSAWA Kiyoshi, 2001) is a landmark of “internet horror.” The ghosts, accompanied by a hushed and tension-filled score, evoke both fear and an eerie sense of beauty. Beyond its chilling horror elements, however, the film can also be seen as an interesting human drama that questions the nature of human connection. For today’s viewers, Pulse further offers a touch of nostalgia, with its Y2K fashion and depictions of Tokyo around the year 2000.

ハロウィンシーズンにあわせて、「奇妙な」日本映画の二本立て上映を行います！

少し不気味ではありますが、北米のスラッシャー映画のようなタイプではないので、グロテスクなホラー映画が苦手な方でも、楽しめる上映会だと思います（100％の保証はできませんが……）。両方の上映に来ても、どちらか一方だけでも大丈夫です。

上映作品を紹介します：

『犬王』（湯浅政明監督、2021年）は、約600年前の日本を舞台に、琵琶法師の友魚と、「異形」でありながらも才能豊かな踊り手・犬王が、歌と舞を通して失われた平家の霊を慰めようとする物語が描かれます。

※この作品はPG-13指定です。13歳以上の鑑賞が推奨され、13歳未満の鑑賞には保護者の助言が強く推奨されます。

『回路』（黒沢清監督、2001年）は、「インターネットホラー」の金字塔です。静かで緊張感のある音楽と共に現れる幽霊は恐怖を呼び起こすと同時に美しささえ感じさせます。本作はホラー映画としてだけでなく、人と人とのつながりを問いかけるヒューマンドラマとしても鑑賞することができます。さらに、現代に生きる私たちにとっては、Y2Kファッションや2000年前後の東京の街並みを一種のノスタルジアとともに楽しめる作品です。
