Double Feature Film Screening
for EJCA members and guests only
From October’s Japanese Horror movies to this month’s screenings of classics by two well-known Japanese film makers, with delicious bentos in between. Come for one or both.
Date: Saturday, November 22
10:30 AM - 12:00: Rhapsody in August (Akira Kurosawa)
Grandma Kane lives in Nagasaki with her 4 grandchildren while word comes from Hawaii that her rich older brother is dying and wants to see her. The film is about Nagasaki and the bomb’s legacy to Japan.
12:00 - 1:00 PM: Lunch Break
1:00 - 2:30 PM: Good Morning (Yasujiro Ozu)
This comedy/drama looks at a Westernized suburban area in Japan in the late 50’s, focusing mainly on the daily lives of a small community. Two boys begin a silence strike to press their parents to purchase a television.
Both movies are in Japanese with English subtitles.

Food and drinks: please reserve Bento A or B at registration
Bento A: Sushi bento (3 futomaki, 2 inarizushi, simmered kabocha, tsukemono). $15
Bento B: Tonkatsu bento (tonkatsu, cabbage, rice, simmered kabocha, tsukemono) $20
Miso soup will help take the chill off the fall weather and ...each bento will have a choice of popcorn/snack bag and a beverage (pop, Japanese drinks etc.).
Choices of snacks can be made at the event and do not need to be pre-ordered.

You can come to both screenings, or just one, with or without Bento.

孫達は祖母の昔話に心を動かされ、親の心無い言動に苛立つ。 アメリカ人の親戚は誰よりも祖母の原爆体験に寄り添い、心の交流が辛い記憶を浄化していく。 戦争を恨んでも、国や人を憎まない、世界的巨匠・黒澤明が描く平和への祈り。

1:00 - 2:30 ２本目上映『お早う』（小津安二郎）
1950年代後半、近所付き合いの小さな波風に振り回される大人たちと、テレビを買ってとねだる子供たち。東京郊外の新興住宅地を舞台に、戦後の庶民生活を小津流に活写した作品で、軽さのある演出が際立っている。
